Anaerobic respiration is the process of release of energy in an enzymatically controlled stepwise incomplete (partial) degradation of organic food (glucose) without O2 being used as the terminal electron acceptor.
Glycolysis is common to both aerobic and anaerobic modes of respiration. It occurs in the cytoplasm. It is the first stage of breakdown of glucose in aerobic respiration and the only step in glucose breakdown in anaerobic respiration. So, the net gain of ATP is the net ATP produced at the end of glycolysis i.e. 2.
In lactic acid fermentation, pyruvic acid produced in glycolysis is directly reduced by NADH to form lactic acid.
