Solution

Interconversion of matter may be defined as the conversion of matter from one state to another state and back to its original state.

a) Melting: Melting is a process in which solids get converted into the liquid state on heating. When solids get heated, molecules get kinetic energy, when kinetic energy becomes so high that it overcomes the force of attraction and it gets converted into the liquid state. For example, the ice gets converted into liquid on heating.

b) Vaporization: Vaporization is the process in which liquids get converted into the gaseous state on heating, this process is also known as melting.

c) Condensation: Condensation is a process in which gases get converted into liquids when the temperature of gas decreases. Condensation of water vapours when it comes to contact with the plate.

d) Solidification: Solidification is a process in which liquids get converted into solids when their temperature is decreased. When the temperature decreases molecules lose their kinetic energy and come closer, hence the force of attraction increases and liquids get converted into solids. For example conversion of water into ice.

e) Sublimation: It is the process, in which solids are directly converted into the gaseous state without passing through the liquid state, For example, naphthalene balls, camphor etc.
