Alternation of generation:

  1. Alternation of generation is defined as alternate development of two kind of individuals in the lifecycle of an organism.

Isomorphic alternation of generation:

  1. In an isomorphic alternation of generations , the two gametes known as gametophyte and sporophyte are morphologically identical.
  2. Isomorphic alternation of generations is found in Ectocarpus.
  3. In Ectocarpus, the haploid cells called tetraspores are present that produce sexual plants which are haploid in nature.
  4. Antheredia or oogonia are present in tetraspores. This kind of lifecycle is known as biphasic or isomorphic type of alternation of generation.
  5. These bear only two phases, the haploid phase and the diploid phase.
