Question

What is meant by Respiration Quotient (RQ) ? When will the value of RQ be 1 and when will it be less than 1?

Open in App
Solution

Respiratory Quotient is the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide evolved to the volume of oxygen consumed during respiration under standard temperature and pressure.
RQ= Vol of CO2 evolved / Vol of O2 consumed
It will bequal to 1 in the case of carbohydrates as-
C6H12O6+6O26CO2+Energy+H2O
RQ= 6CO2/6O2 = 1
It will be less than 1 in the case of fats and proteins as-
(Fats) - C57H104O6+80O257CO2+52H2O
RQ= 576CO2/806O2 = 0.71
