Question

What is negative transcriptional control?

Open in App
Solution

Negative Transcriptional Control:

  1. The inhibition of the process of transcription and further the expression of the gene by the repressor is called negative transcriptional control.
  2. For example- a lac repressor inhibits the expression of the lac operon.
  3. This occurs in the following way.
  4. In the absence of inducer the repressor substance binds to the operator and represses the transcription process.
  5. In the presence of the inducer, the inducer binds with the repressor substance and inhibits the repressor from binding with the operator.
  6. Operator remains free to carry out transcription, and gene expression occurs efficiently.
