Question

What is neutralization? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Salt and water are formed by reaction of acid with base or base with acid. This reaction is known as neutralization.
Example:
HCl(aq)+NaOH(aq)NaCl(aq)+H2O(l)

The aqueous solutions or the salts produced by neutralization of weak acid with strong base possess basic nature because the salt hydrolyses in water and produces OH.
Examples:
H2CO3(aq)+2NaOH(aq)Na2CO3(aq)+2H2O(I)

The aqueous solutions of salts produced by neutralization of weak base and strong acid possess acidic nature because the salt hydrolyses in water and produces H3O+.
Example:
HCl(aq)+NH4OH(aq)NH4Cl(aq)+H2O(l)
The aqueous solution of the salt produced is neutral.
