Parturition:
- The process of giving birth to young ones from the mother's body is known as parturition.
- It is also known as childbirth.
- Several hormones help in the parturition process, such as estrogen, oxytocin, and relaxin.
Hormones that are involved in parturition:
- Estrogen is secreted by the adrenal glands, and it helps in inducing uterine contractions.
- Oxytocin helps in uterine contractions and also in milk production during the period of breastfeeding.
- Fetal ejection reflex developed due to uterine contractions helps trigger the release of oxytocin from the posterior pituitary of the mother.
- Relaxin helps in relaxing the pelvic ligaments and widens the uterus.
- It is secreted into the circulation by the corpus luteum in the ovary.
- Prostaglandin facilitates cervix widening and is secreted by the prostate gland.
