Phagocytosis is a process in which the phagocytic cells engulf the microbes. It is an important mechanism of innate immunity. It is performed by leucocytes. In response to pathogenic infections, the total count of leucocytes will increase sharply. The most important phagocytes are the macrophages and the neutrophils.
