What is Polar...
Question
What is Polar and Nonpolar?
Open in App
Solution
Polar molecules contain polar bonds due to the difference in electronegativity of two atoms that are bonded.
There is some charge generated in polar species, one carries a negative charge and another one carries a positive charge.
An electronegative atom contains a negative charge and an Electropositive atom contains a positive charge.
Example of polar molecules is Hydrochloric acid
HCl
, Sulphur dioxide
SO
2
etc.
Nonpolar molecules do not have any charge or charge distributed equally in a molecule.
There is very less difference in electronegativity between two atoms of nonpolar molecules.
Non-polar molecules dissolve in nonpolar solvents.
Linear molecules are nonpolar.
Example of nonpolar molecules is Homo diatomic molecules like Hydrogen
H
2
, Oxygen
O
2
, Carbon tetrachloride
CCl
4
etc.
