There is a protein p53 which is called as the guardian angel of the cell's genome. This is the protein which is responsible for the control of the G1 checkpoint in the cell cycle. The protein is present at lower concentrations in the cell. When the protein is present in higher concentration, the cell division is stopped and the cell undergoes apoptosis. If there is some mutation which can be repaired, the correction is made. Thus, the protein helps in the maintenance of the functional DNA in a normal cell.
