  1. Cyanobacteria is another name for blue-green algae.
  2. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic organisms found in lakes, streams, and oceans and are capable of using sunlight as their energy source.
  3. They contain pigments like phycoerythrin and phycocyanin which are responsible for the blue-green colour.
  4. Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria also contain chlorophyll a, yellowish carotenoids, and blue-pigment phycobilins.
  5. Only the appearance of these pigments causes the blue-green colour of the algae.
