Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic reticulum:

Based on the presence of ribosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum present in the cells are of two types namely,

Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER): contains ribosomes.

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER): lacks ribosomes.

  1. RER functions to aid in the production of proteins and enzymes as they contain ribosomes.
  2. It is needed in high numbers for those cells which requires more protein.
  3. The structure comprises large, thick flat sac-like structures called the cisternae.
  4. Further they contain another protein complex called translocon which is responsible for protein translation.
