Scapula:

  1. Scapula is also known as shoulder blade.
  2. It is a large, flat, triangular shaped bone that lies in the upper back.

Location:

Located in the dorsal portion of the thorax between the second and the seventh rib.

It has three processes:

  1. Coracoid process: It is a thick curved structure and it allows attachment of ligaments and muscles.
  2. Glenoid cavity: It articulates with the head of the humerus.
  3. Acromion process: It articulates with the clavicle.

It has 3 joints:

  1. Glenohumeral joint: Ball and socket joint that articulates head of humerus to the glenoid cavity of the scapula.
  2. Acromioclavicular joint: Clavicle articulates with the acromion process of the scapula.
  3. Scapulothoracic joint: Scapula meets with the ribs at the back of the chest.
