Significance of cell wall:

  1. Cell wall forms a framework for the cell to prevent over expansion.
  2. The cell wall provides mechanical strength and support. It also controls the direction of cell growth.​
  3. Cell wall protects the cell from internal turgor pressure.
  4. It sends signals for the cell to enter the cell cycle in order to divide and grow.
  5. The cell wall provides a barrier to protect against plant viruses and other pathogens.
  6. It stores carbohydrates for use in plant growth, especially in seeds.
  7. Cell wall is a porous structure which allows passage of substances and communication between the cells.
