Solution

Simple tissue: These tissues are composed of cells that are structurally and functionally similar. Thus, these tissues are all made of one type of cell.

Types of simple tissues

Simple are primarily of three types, parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma.

Parenchyma

  • These are rounded cells with thin cell walls, small nucleus and a large vacuole. It may store food, provide temporary support.

Collenchyma

  • It is a living tissue that acts as a mechanical tissue and provides mechanical support to young dicot stems.

  • The cells are elongated with deposition of cellulose in the corners that contain few chloroplasts.

  • Intercellular space is mostly absent.

Sclerenchyma

  • It is a dead tissue with dead cells that are devoid of protoplasm.

  • The cell walls are thickened due to lignification.

  • The cavity/lumen is nearly absent due to lignified walls.

  • The cells are closely packed and lack intercellular spaces.
