what is soft soap. give example

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Soaps are the sodium and potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acid. A soap molecule has a large non-ionic hydrocarbon group and an ionic group COO-M+ (where M could be K or Na).

Soft Soaps: These are the potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acid (instead of sodium salts). They dissolve faster than Hard soaps (Sodium salts of carboxylic acid) in water and lather readily. Hence, they have better cleansing action than hard soaps.
They are generally derived from linseed oil, coconut oil, castor oil etc.
Eg,: C17H35COO-K+ (Potassium Stearate), C17H33COO-K+ (Potassium Oleate)
