What is soil conservation?

Solution

Soil conservation:

Soil conservation is the process of reducing soil loss due to erosion or diminished fertility as a result of excessive use of soil, acidification, salinization, or other chemical soil contamination.

Methods of soil conservation:

  1. Terrace gaming: Terraces are built on steep hillsides to provide level surfaces to grow plants. They have the potential to prevent soil erosion and soil runoff.
  2. Contour ploughing: In this method, parallel ploughing to a hill slope's contours creates a natural barrier for water to flow down the slope.
  3. Shelter belts: In coastal and arid areas, trees are planted in rows to reduce wind movement and protect soil cover.
  4. Rock dam: Rocks are heaped up to impede the flow of water. This prevents gullies and additional soil loss.
