Universal indicator contains a spectrum of dyes. It is typically composed of water, propan-1-ol, phenolphthalein sodium salt, sodium hydroxide, methyl red , bromothymol blue monosodium salt, and thymol blue monosodium salt.

It gives a variety of colours viz.

Neutral sol.- green

Acidic sol.- different tinges of red, orange and yellow.

Alkaline sol.- different tinges of blue , indigo and violet.
