Dear Student,
The cell membrane or plasma membrane is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment.
The plasma membrane consists of lipids ( mainly phospholipids, glycolipids and cholesterol), proteins and carbohydrates . The fundamental structure of the membrane is the phospholipid bilayer. The proteins are embedded within this lipid bilayer and carbohydrates are attached to the proteins and extend out to the surface.
Function of cell membrane is same everywhere
It protects intracellular organelles from the outside environment.
It selectively allows the molecules to move in and out of the cell. Gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen pass through diffusion, while other small molecules such as sugar pass through a process called passive transport. Ions such as sodium or potassium are transported through a process called active transport ( with the utilization of ATP ). Movement of water molecules through the membrane takes place by osmosis.
Hope you got the answer.
Cheers!!!
