Question

What is the difference between a linear motion and a translatory motion?

Open in App
Solution

When a body moves in a straight line it is said to be in Linear motion (or rectilinear motion).

When all points in a body move the same distance in the same amount of time then it is said to be in Translatory motion or translational motion. The translatory motion does not always require that the object move in a straight line.

Linear motion is a type of translational motion and is strictly a one-dimensional motion along a straight line.
