Question

What is the difference between locus and equation?

Open in App
Solution

Locus is shape created by the set of points whose position satisfies a given set of rules.
Eg:
  • Straight line "The locus of all points equidistant from two given points".
  • Ellipse "The locus of all points where the sum of the distance to two fixed points is a constant."
  • A Circle is "the locus of points on a plane that are a certain distance from a central point".
An equation is a mathematical statement that states two things are equal.
Since locus is simply a mathematical statement satisfying certain conditions,we can say that locus is a form of equation.
So there's no difference between locus and equation because locus itself is an equation.
