What is the difference between positive and negative gene regulation?

Open in App
Solution

Gene regulation:

  1. Gene regulation is the process of controlling when, where, and how many genes are expressed.
  2. Even though they have the same DNA, multicellular creatures have diverse sets of genes.
  3. Gene regulation may be classified into two types: positive and negative.

Positive gene regulation: Positive gene regulation is the type of gene regulation that enables the expression of genes.

Negative gene regulation: Negative gene regulation is the type of gene regulation that prevents the expression of genes.

Difference between positive and negative gene regulation:

Positive gene regulation

Negative gene regulation

1) Positive regulation is the regulation in which the presence of a certain regulatory factor promotes the quantitative expression of genetic information.1) Negative regulation is the existence of certain regulatory components that reduce the expression of genetic information.
2) It is the form of gene regulation that allows genes to be expressed.2) It is the form of gene control that aids in the prevention of gene expression.
3) Transcription factors bind to the promoter region of the gene.3) Repressors bind to the operator region of the gene.
4) The binding of transcription factors allows RNA polymerase to bind to the promoter region.4) The binding of repressors to the gene's operator region prevents RNA polymerase from binding to the promoter region.
5) The tryptophan gene, where tryptophan acts as a corepressor to block its own transcription is the example of positive gene regulation5) The Trp operon, which is regulated by a negative feedback loop, is a typical example of negative repressible regulation of gene expression.
