Question

what is the difference in function of cytoplasmic ribosome and ribosome attached to RER?

Open in App
Solution

The cytoplasmic ribosome is found in the cytoplasm where as some ribosomes are found attached to the endoplasmic reticulum(RER) also known as the bound ribosomes. Even though the cytoplasmic ribosomes are not attached to any structure and remain as free floating. The cytoplasmic ribosomes group together to form the polysomes. The bound ribosomes are present on the surface of endoplasmic reticulum. This make the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum rough in appearance. So ER is known as the rough endoplasmic reticulum or RER.
