Question

What is the effect of temperature on the resistance of a metal? The resistance of a platinum resistances thermometer at 0oC temperature is 3.0Ω and at 100oC it is 3.75Ω. Its resistance at an unknown temperature is 3.15Ω. Find the value of the unknown temperature.

Solution

Resistance of metal (or conductor) increases with increases in temperature and vice-versa.
Given : Ro=3Ω at To=0oC
Also, restsiance at T1=100oC is R1=3.75Ω
Using R1=Ro(1+αΔT)
Here, ΔT=T1To=1000=100oC
Or 3.75=3(1+α×100)
α=2.5×103/oC
GIven : R2=3.15Ω
Using R2=Ro(1+αΔT)
Here, ΔT=T2To=T20=T2
Or 3.15=3(1+2.5×103T2)
Or 2.5×103T2=0.05
T2=20oC
