What is the end product of denitrification?

Open in App
Solution

Denitrification:

  1. It is the process of converting nitrate which is fixed nitrogen and nitrite from the ecosystem to gaseous forms of nitrogen such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen (N2).
  2. So denitrification helps to return biologically inert form (N2) to the atmosphere.
  3. The denitrification process is used in wastewater treatment for the conversion of dangerous contaminants to benign gas which is nontoxic.
  4. This process is performed by bacteria which are known as Denitrifying bacteria or nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB).
  5. Examples of denitrifying bacteria are- Pseudomonas, Thiobacillus denitrificans, Micrococcus denitrificans, Achromobacter, and Serratia.
  6. The end product of denitrification is Dinitrogen gas (N2) which returns to the atmosphere.
