Question

What is the formula for refraction through spherical Lens when the refractive index of the medium on two sides of lens are different ?

Open in App
Solution

Refraction at Spherical Surface

Distance of object and image from spherical pole is uandv

Redfractive index of rarer medium and denser medium is μ1andμ2

We get,

tanα=MNOM,tanβ=MNMIandtanγ=MNMC

Now, for Δ NOC

i = NOM +NCM

i=MNOM+MNMC …….1

Similarly,

r=MNMC +MNMI …….2

Now by using Snell’s law we get

μ1sin i = μ2sin r

Substituting i and r from Eq. (1) and (2), we get

μ1OM+μ2MI=μ2μ1MC

As OM=u, MI=+v, MC=+R

Hence, the equation becomes, μ2v-μ1u=μ2μ1R
