Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic reticulum:

  1. Endoplasmic reticulum is the cell organelle that is tubular and flat sac-like structures called cisternae.
  2. Based on the presence of ribosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum present in the cells are of two types namely, Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER): contains ribosomes and Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER): lacks ribosomes.
  3. RER functions to aid in the production of proteins and enzymes as they contain ribosomes.
  4. Further they contain another protein complex called translocon which is responsible for protein translation.
  5. SER functions to aid in the synthesis and storage of lipids, steroids and hormones.
  6. It also stores calcium ions needed for the nervous system and muscular systems.
  7. It helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates.
