Wheat is the second most important food crop in the country after rice both in area and production. About 14% of the total cropped area in the country is under wheat cultivation. India accounts fro about 12% of the total wheat production of world. The progress in wheat cultivation since 1967-68 has made India self-sufficient in foodgrains. It forms the staple food for people in northern and north-western parts of the country.
