Solution

Endocrine glands are the glands that release their secretions directly into the blood. Their secretions are known as Hormones. They are also known as Ductless glands.

The largest endocrine gland is the Thyroid gland.

Thyroid gland:

  1. It is a butterfly-shaped structure that mainly comprises two lobes on either side right and left. These are connected by a narrow tissue band referred to as the isthmus. Each of the lobes is close to 5 cm in length and 3 cm wide with a thickness of 2 cm while the isthmus is about 1.25 cm long and wide.
  2. It is found on the front side of the neck.
  3. It weighs around approximately 25 – 30 grams in adults.
  4. This gland regulates significant metabolic processes which are associated with body temperature, heart rate and energy levels. Any fluctuation to this structure has an impact on the whole body.
  5. The thyroid gland is mainly involved in secreting two hormones, Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine hormone (T3). The hormones of the thyroid raise the rate of cellular metabolism. The secretion is triggered by the thyroid-stimulating hormone produced by the anterior pituitary.
