Question

What is the maximum number of electrons that can be accommodated in the M shell of the atom ?

Solution

According to Bohr's model, the electrons revolve around the nucleus in certain orbits or shells.

  1. The number of electrons that can be accommodated in different orbit or shells is fixed.
  2. The formula for number of electrons in a shell is 2n2, n = shell number.
  3. The first orbit (n=1)known as K-shellcan contain 2×12=2electrons.
  4. And, for second orbit (n=2orLshell),Maximum number of electrons= 2×(2)2=8electrons
  5. for third orbit (n=3orMshell), Maximum number of electrons =2×(3)2=18electrons

Hence, the maximum number of electrons that can be accommodated in the M shell are 18electrons.
