Question
What is the meaning of polymer and monomer?
Open in App
Solution
A polymer is a macromolecule that is made up of several small units combined together to form a polymer.
Examples of polymers are rubber, polyvinyl, polyether, nylon66, etc.
Polymers can be divided into three parts: natural polymer, synthetic polymer, and semi-synthetic polymer.
Each polymer is different in its physical and chemical properties.
Polymer is made up of many such small units called monomers.
Monomers form a covalent linkage with other molecules to form bigger units.
Example: Formation of Nylon-66: In this two monomer units are used i.e. adipic acid and Hexaminemethylene diamine.
The structure of Nylon66 contains two monomers and each of them contains 6 carbon atoms.
