Middle lamellae:

  1. Middle lamellae is a pectin layer made up of calcium and magnesium pectate.
  2. Middle lamellae is present in the plant cells and develop from the cell plate during cytokinesis.
  3. The cell plate that is formed during cell division itself develops into middle lamella or lamellum.

Functions of middle lamellae:

  1. It acts as a cementing layer between the cell wall of two adjoining cells.
  2. This gives plants stability, and allows for plants to form plasmodesmata between cells.
