Question

What is the number of valence electrons in oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

The number of electrons present in the outermost shell (valence shell) of an atom is called valence electrons.

The electronic configuration of oxygen is given below.

An atomic number of oxygen = 8.

Electronic configuration = 2,6 ie, K = 2,L =6.

An oxygen atom has 6 electrons in its valence shell. ie, L-shell.

K shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, and the L shell can hold a maximum of 8 electrons.

Hence the number of the valence electron in oxygen is 6 electrons.
