What is the odour of the gas released when NH4Cl and Ca(OH)2 are mixed?
Irritating and Pungent odour
When we prepare ammonia in the classroom or laboratory by mixing ammonium chloride and calcium hydroxide, we sense an irritating and pungent smell. This is due to the formation of ammonia. The equation for the reaction is given below.
2NH4Cl+Ca(OH)2→CaCl2+2H2O+2NH3↑
So, the odour of ammonia gas is irritating and pungent.
