Question

What is the oxidation state of p in ph3

Solution

the oxidation state of p in ph3 is +3.

Phosphorus exhibits +3 and +5 oxidation states. However, it forms PH3 only, not PH5 this is becoz In PH5, the bond has to be formed between the d-orbital of phosphorous and 1s orbital of hydrogen. As, the energy difference between the two orbitals is very high, bond formation is not favoured. Thus, PH5 does not exist as overlapping of orbitals is less. It dissociates to give PH3 and H2. In the case of PH3, overlapping occurs between the p-orbitals of phosphorous and s orbitals of hydrogen because similar energy levels
