Air enters the body via the nasal and mouth cavities, then the pharynx, larynx, and trachea.
At the fifth thoracic vertebrae, the trachea separates into the left and right bronchi.
Air enters the lungs via the bronchi.
Air is breathed through the nostrils, and the air in the nasal cavity is cleaned by the fine hair follicles that exist within them.
A network of blood arteries in the hollow also helps to warm the air.
This air then enters the pharynx, then the larynx, and finally the trachea.
The trachea and bronchi are lined with ciliated epithelial cells and goblet cells (secretory cells), which secrete mucus to keep the respiratory system wet.
Once in the bronchus, the air flows into the bronchioles and ultimately into the alveoli.
