The Perkin reaction was created as a result of further research into this reaction and is currently the standard method for producing cinnamic acid and its analogs.
It is assumed that the Perkin reaction proceeds by converting the acid anhydride into an enolate anion, which then combines with the aldehyde to produce an alkoxide.
The cinnamic acid ester is created by acylation and removal of the beta acyloxy derivative, which is made possible by the intramolecular acylation that is ensured. Cinnamic acid is produced by ester hydrolysis.
