Question

What is the potential energy of an electron present in N shell of the Be3+ ion

Open in App
Solution

Total Energy = -13.6(Z²/n²) eV/atom
where, Z = Atomic Number =4 (for Be-atom)
n = number of shell = 4 (for N)
{Since,
K=1
L=2
M=3
N-4}

Therefore, Total Energy of Be3+ ion
T.E.=-13.6×(4²/4²)
=-13.6eV/atom {or eV/ion}

As we know, Total Energy = -(Kinetic energy)=(Potential energy)/2

P.E.= 2x T.E.
= 2X (-13.6) eV/ion
= -27.2 eV/ion
Hence, potential energy of N
shell electron of Be3+ ion= -27.2 eV/ion
