Question

What is the process of external respiration?

Open in App
Solution

Respiration:

  1. Respiration is the exchange of gases between the external environment and the organism's cells.
  2. It begins by inhaling air higher in oxygen concentration and exhaling air with higher carbon dioxide content.
  3. Hence, respiration involves both inhaling and exhaling.

External respiration:

  1. The air inhaled through the nostrils makes it way through the pharynx, larynx, and trachea to the bronchioles.
  2. From the bronchioles, it finally reaches the lungs.
  3. In the lungs, air-filled sacs called alveoli have a highly vascular wall.
  4. The exchange of gases takes place between these vascular walls of the alveoli and the bloodstream.
  5. Oxygen is taken up by the alveoli while carbon dioxide is released through their walls.
  6. The air that is exhaled contains a higher concentration of carbon dioxide.
  7. This gaseous exchange between the alveolar walls and the bloodstream is called external respiration.
