Solution

The correct options are
C CCl3.CHO
D CHCl3

When chlorine reacts with ethyl alcohol in the presence of NaOH,

chloroform is obtained as a final product.

Step 1- Oxidation:

CH3CH2OH + Cl2 CH3CHO + 2HCl

(Ethanol) (Acetaldehyde)

Ethanol is ethyl alcohol .

Step 2-Chlorination:

CH3CHO + 3 Cl2 → CCl3CHO + 3HCl

(Chloral)

Step 3- Hydrolysis :

CCl3CHO + NaOH → CHCl3 + HCOONa

(Chloroform)

Options (C) and (D) is correct.
