Central nervous system:
The central nervous system, or CNS, is the body's principal command and control center.
It comprises the brain and spinal cord.
Purpose:
It collects data from all across the body as sensory perceptions.
It helps to coordinate actions all over the body.
It helps in responding to the external surroundings and interacting with our environment.
Function:
It regulates respiration rate, blood pressure, thermoregulation, and maintains equilibrium with the endocrine system, as well as all voluntary and involuntary organs such as kidneys, heart, and lungs.
It is also in charge of sense perception, memory, intelligence, emotions, and other functions.
Structure:
The brain, spinal cord, and nerve cells are the three main components of the central nervous system.
Thought, memory formation, movement, and consciousness are all controlled by the brain.
The spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of neurons that runs the length of the spinal column, linked to the base of the brain (brain stem).
For messages to be transmitted throughout the CNS and the body, there are billions of nerve cells that help in the functioning of the brain and spinal cord.
