Dear Student,
The Poona Pact was an agreement signed between Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi on September 24, 1932. According to the Pact, the reserved seats were provided for the depressed classes in the provincial legislatures for which the elections would be conducted through joint electorates. The number of seats reserved for the depressed classes would depend on the total strength of the provincial legislatures. Even in the central legislature, the same principle of joint electorates and reserved seats for depressed classes was adopted. In the central legislature, 19 percent of seats were reserved for the depressed classes. This system was adopted for 10 years unless a mutual agreement is arrived to revoke it. A special grant that guaranteed a sum of money would be allotted for the education of the depressed classes or untouchables in the Provinces. This was the result of Poona Pact of 1932.
