Question

What is the role of anomalous behavior of water in preserving aquatic life in regions of cold climate?

Open in App
Solution

Role of anomalous behavior of water
In cold regions temperature is usually well below 4oC
As temperature decreases, the water at the surface starts contracting.
Which results min increase of water density and it sinks to bottom
This process continues till the temperature of lake falls to 4oC
beyond this point due to cool conditions water starts to cool farther, it starts expanding instead of contracting
this results in decreases of density at surface
the temperature at surface fall under 0oC which form ICE at the surface.
Bat water under the ice is at 4oC
As Ice is bad conductor below the Ice layer.
due to this the aquatic life below the Ice can survive wen in this harsh conditions.
