The DNA and ribosomes present inside the mitochondria are responsible for protein synthesis.
The genes in the mitochondrial DNA take part in oxidative phosphorylation for the production of ATPs and in the synthesis of proteins.
Hence, it is also called semi-autonomous organelle.
