Question

What is the role of gall bladder? What may happen if it stops functioning or is removed?

Open in App
Solution

Role:

The bile is synthesized by the hepatocytes of the liver which then reaches the gall bladder. The gallbladder, a thin muscular sac, stores and concentrates the bile.

Effects of removal:

● Storage of bile: Bile will directly flow into the duodenum even in absence of food.
● Digestion of fats: As concentrated bile is not formed due to which fat emulsification process is affected, digestion of fat gets hampered.
● Activation of lipase will get hampered.
The bicarbonate ion helps in the neutralisation of the acidic pH of the chyme that enters the duodenum from the stomach. This helps the pancreatic enzymes to work upon the partially-digested food. Absence of bile will hamper this process as well.
