Question

What is the role of villi in digestion

Open in App
Solution

Increasing surface area of absorption

Villi are the numerous finger like projections, whose walls are richly supplied with blood capillaries and lymph vessels. They are able to contract and relax continuously, thus bringing themselves into close contact with the food in the small intestine. The individual cells on the surface of the villi possess free tiny microvilli on their free surfaces, these features greatly increase the surface area of the small intestine .
