Question

What is the RQ of anaerobic respiration?

Open in App
Solution

Respiratory ratio:

  1. RQ or respiratory ratio is defined as the actual ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide eliminated to the volume of oxygen consumed during the process of cellular respiration.
  2. The RQ of anaerobic respiration is infinite.
  3. This is because, in anaerobic respiration, the total volume of oxygen consumed is zero as this process occurs in the absence of oxygen and only carbon dioxide is produced.
  4. Therefore : RQ = CO2 / O2 = 2/0 = infinity.
