Question

What is the second stage of photosynthesis called?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is a process in which the light energy obtained from the sunlight is used in the manufacture of oxygen and sugar molecules in the presence of carbon dioxide and water.

Photosynthesis takes place in two stages:

Step I- Light-dependent reactions:

Light-dependent reactions, which take place in the thylakoid membrane, use light energy to make ATP and NADPH.

Step II- The Calvin cycle

  1. It takes place in the stroma and uses energy derived from these compounds to make GA3 P from CO2.
  2. The second stage of photosynthesis is called the Calvin cycle.
  3. Photosynthesis takes place in two stages – the first phase is where the light reactions or the light-dependant reactions occur.
  4. In the second stage, the light-independent reaction takes place, the Calvin cycle.
  5. They are not directly dependent on light as the required energy carriers namely the NADPH and ATP are already produced from the previously occurred light-dependent reactions.
