Question

What is the template-independent enzymatic synthesis of RNA?

Open in App
Solution

RNA:

  1. A nucleic acid found in cells called ribonucleic acid resembles DNA structurally. But unlike DNA, RNA is typically single-stranded.
  2. Unlike DNA, which has a backbone comprised of deoxyribose, RNA molecules have a backbone made of alternating phosphate groups and sugar ribose.

Template-independent enzymatic synthesis of RNA:

  1. RNA enzymes are usually dependent on DNA for their synthesis.
  2. There is an exception, in this case, an enzyme called Polynucleotide phosphorylase that can synthesize RNA templates without being dependent on DNA.
  3. This enzyme is commonly called the Ochoa enzyme and helps the synthesis of RNA in vitro.
