Valence band theory

Valence bond theory states that electrons in molecules reside in atomic orbitals as opposed to molecular orbitals. When a bond is formed, atomic orbitals overlap, and the more they overlap, the stronger the connection

. The following is a list of the key valence bond theory postulates.

  1. Covalent bonds are created when two valence orbitals (half-filled) from two separate atoms intersect. This overlapping raises the electron density in the region between the two bonding atoms, enhancing the stability of the resultant molecule
  2. . An atom's valence shell, which contains a large number of unpaired electrons, allows it to create a variety of bonds with other atoms. But according to the valence bond theory, the paired electrons in the valence shell are not involved in the synthesis of chemical bonds.
  3. Covalent chemical bonds have a direction and run parallel to the area where the overlapping atomic orbitals are located.
  4. Pi bonds (π) are produced via sidewise overlapping, in contrast to sigma bonds (σ), which are distinguished by the pattern of atomic orbital overlap. Sigma bonds, on the other hand, are created when two atoms overlap along the axis that contains their nuclei

Application of VBT(Valance bond theory)

It clarifies how many molecules create covalent bonds. according to the valence bond theory, the covalent link in an HF molecule is created by the overlap of the hydrogen atom's 1s orbital and the fluorine atom's 2p orbital.
